What Cyprus Companies Are Called: Naming Trends in the Company Register

What the words tell us
- Holding structures. HOLDINGS alone appears in 37,078 company names and INVESTMENTS in 28,334. They reflect Cyprus's role as a base for international holding companies, helped by its double tax treaty network and EU membership since 2004.
- Shipping. SHIPPING, MARINE and related words are a lasting sign of Cyprus's place as one of the world's leading ship-management centres. In the 1960s, 70s and 80s they were among the most common words of all.
- Trading and services. TRADING, ENTERPRISES and SERVICES are the generic names of small and medium businesses serving the local economy.
- Property and construction. PROPERTIES, ESTATES, DEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPERS and CONSTRUCTION(S) track the island's real-estate cycles.
- The newer economy. CONSULTING and SOLUTIONS have climbed steadily. In the 2020s they are among the top words for new companies, reflecting the growth of professional services and technology firms relocating to Cyprus.

Choosing a name for a new company
- Search first. The Registrar refuses names identical or too similar to an existing company. With hundreds of names already containing words like HOLDINGS, INVESTMENTS or TRADING, a distinctive first word matters. Search the register before you apply.
- Avoid restricted words. Words suggesting a regulated activity (for example bank, insurance or fund) or a link to the government need specific permission.
- Think about both languages. The register holds names in Latin and Greek characters. A name that reads well in both can help locally.
